Family Learning

Family Learning

This page will give you an overview of the Family Learning Opportunities we offer at West Monkton!

We are proud to be the only school in Taunton to work with SS&L to offer adult learning opportunities.

If you would like any further information please see Mrs Lawrence.

Let's Cook!
Six families joined Mrs Lawrence and Miss Floris for 2 sessions of family learning promoting eating a healthy diet.  Families (including teachers) learnt new skills and had lots of fun with resources and ingredients provided thanks to SS&L funding. We cooked together with our families and made a yummy Spaghetti Bolognese, had a 'rate the plate' jelly competition and gave each other hints and tips to encourage children to eat more veggies!
We would love to run more sessions around cooking and food nutrition so watch this space in the coming months!
Phonics Workshop - Year 1
20 learners joined our Zoom phonics workshop this September. Please see the PP below if would like to know a little more about phonics!
Thank you to the learners who were happy to trial virtual family learning and who all took part with enthusiasm!
The learners received 2 goodie bags with resources to support their learning.
New Year plans for Family Learning!

September 2019 - July 2020
What an amazing and unique  year of Family Learning we have had! Over 150 adult learners took part in courses or workshops throughout the year.
We have run
  • bread making workshops with 'The truth about food' talks
  • Welcome to phonics workshops
  • Mastery maths workshops
  • Literacy Boost Course for Year 1 families
  • First Aid courses with certificate of attendance
  • Literacy Boost course for Year 2 parents and carers.
We have also run our first workshop In Ruishton Primary and hope to do many more and we have also supporting Blackbrook Primary in running their first Family Learning sessions.
During the summer term we have all now experienced home learning in a global pandemic! Many parents and carers have become teachers and had to learn many new skills.
Our school has been a champion of zoom offering children and their families weekly opportunities to be taught by class teachers.
We also offered two virtual family learning opportunities this term.
  • Solveig from Live Naturally a number of our families took part in a breadmaking session.
  • Cross stitch introduction with Mrs Lawrence.
In both workshops the resources were either delivered or provided to the families so they could take part. Zoom was used as a platform to deliver the workshops and to celebrate the learning.

Family Learning Co-ordinator

I have been involved in Family Learning in West Monkton for the last 8 years and leading it for 5 years. I also teach Year 1 and have been teaching EYFS and KS1 for 15 years. I love every minute of classroom teaching and Family Learning gives me another opportunity to be excited about learning and share my love of learning with others.
